This course consists of two classroom sessions and a two hours range qualification component for a combined total of approximately 16 hours of instruction.
A shooting score of 70% on the approved course of fire using a standard B-27 target is required for successful completion. This class is a requirement to obtain your Initial Washington DC Handgun Carry Permit.
Similar to our Defensive Handgun 101 class, this class is a defensive handgun class at its core, containing topics applicable to provide the student with the "mental ammunition" (knowledge) to assist them in an armed encounter.
This course is usually only offered as private instruction (see below for more information).
Pursuant to the decision of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit, Wrenn v. District of Columbia and Grace v. District of Columbia, applicants for a license to carry a concealed handgun in the District of Columbia no longer need to provide a good reason for carrying a handgun. All other suitability and training requirements as described in the regulations and application must still be met. All forms and information sheets will be updated shortly. In the meantime, if there is a reference to providing a good reason, please disregard.
If your application for a carry license has been previously denied because of a failure to provide a good reason, you may reapply for a license to carry. You will not be charged a fee for this application.
Carry Handgun Registration
The handgun you intend to carry with your DC Handgun Permit must be registered with the District.
All applicants must be trained on District of Columbia law on firearms and self-defense; you cannot request an exemption from it.
If you are requesting an exemption to the firearms training course requirements, section 2336.3 of the regulation requires you to provide supporting documentation and training certifications. (You may be requested to provide a training course syllabus to verify what material was taught during your training)
*The student is responsible for range fees, application fees, fingerprinting fees, and any other fees required by the District of Columbia.
*The student will supply his/her own firearm, eye/hearing protection, holster, 2 magazines, and 200 rounds of ammunition. Firearms and ammo are available for those who have not yet purchased a handgun.
*While this course satisfies all requirements by the District of Columbia, Urban Defense LLC does not guarantee that the applicant will receive approval from the District for a Washington DC Handgun Permit. Permits are approved at the discretion of the District.
*The student is responsible to know whether or not they are training exempt.
*Class fees are not refundable.
